There is nothing wrong with making the movie about the journeys taken by both Dan and Carter, but it doesn't quite manage to do that; instead it seems to equivocate, itself not clear on who the movie is about. Dan's wife gives birth to a girl. On his way out of the building, Carter runs into Alex, and they exchange pleasantries. End your speech with an attitude, not a platitude. Get it right, and they won't forget your movie in a hurry. As we learn more about Morty's home life, we realize this only confirms the suspicions of his wife, who thinks he's a loser.
