Right now I bet is something other than English or your native language. It does not help to uninstall and then reinstall word either. The template is re-created the next time you open Word. Type the word, sentence or paragraph to be indicated by the first footnote. You restart Word and all your problems are solved. Is there some sort of driver that could fix this? In essence, I seem to have two different proofing languages going on in the same document. I would rather not use this as a solution since I don't have any problems with the program except for when saving--I can scroll, edit, etc.
Which is what I suspect happened to you in the first place. I would really appreciate any help. It is as though the keyboard no longer has alphabet typing functions! I have switched off the research page each time. I know people who could not find a way to fix it so they went and tried to reload vista and then literally crashed their harddrive. In the future, must I always open Word in safe mode? What type of computer, which Operating System do you have and what version of Word? I've been at it for 3 days now.

Microsoft gave instructions on their site to fix this error yet they still have the automatic update for Word which will cause this problem in the first place. I have downloaded the recommended stuff fixes off the Microsoft sites and still nothing. A bullet should appear to the left of your document. I have the Office Home and Student 2007 version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
You need to go through your styles and modify them to have the correct settings. Since you are losing all of your defaults, something is preventing you from saving the Normal template. I had the same kind of issue with Word'07 not scrolling and being unable to edit documents, but the registry key fix did not work for me. Click on the worksheet where you wish to insert a signature line. I don't know if this helps, but I used to have Word 2003 on this machine and had no problem with it. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window. I just restarted my computer about 20 minutes ago and will do so a bit later.
Is there anyway to fix this? It seems the pieces I have pasted in to this document refuse to change their default proofing language no matter how many times I change it for the document as a whole. Every time I open a new document, the proofing language is stuck as Swedish. If you are experiencing any problems with Word 2007, it is due to an automatic update you may have downloaded for Word 2007. It is not a protecterd file as far as I can tell. In fact, when I set styles to default Times New Roman 12 instead of Calibri 11 they are lost as well when I open a new document. I tried the registry fix, but no dice. Surprisingly, I don't have this problem with Excel. I know, as a voice of experience.
I would mark this as an answer for me, thank you. Microsoft was no help whatsoever. Actually, I did some more digging around and googled around and found a site where someone was experiencing the same problem as I was. Normal opens in a separate window you'll see the filename on the title bar. The dialog box won't open up. As I said earlier, I don't have any problems with saving files in Excel, just Word. If it gets corrupted odd things can happen.
After you do, restart your computer and Word should work again. It is not, generally, an application or document setting. At least it hasn't done that today after reinstalling it, but I still don't know why suddenly Word as of yesterday has stopped working like it used to. If the device has an activity light, wait a few seconds after it quits blinking before removing the device. I think it has something to do with a bad Normal. I deleted the laserfiche add-in and after that, Word began functioning normally again. You can modify the Normal style but often you also have to select all the text Ctrl+A and manually re-apply the proper language via the Language dialog box.
