We follow Teddy on his quest, through every dark corridor and perilous confrontations. It is because of this that the thrilling conclusion will leave many blindsided. Federal Marshall Teddy Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule travel to a government-run mental institution for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, near Boston, when there is a report that one of the prisoners has gone missing. There he encounters George Noyce, a patient in solitary confinement. Noyce warns Daniels that everyone else on the island is playing an elaborate game specifically designed for Daniels—including his partner Aule. During their investigation, Daniels and Aule find that Solando has abruptly resurfaced with no explanation as to her former whereabouts or how she escaped.
And that is exactly where it exceeds. But, you see, that is where this thriller becomes something more. And it is no coincidence both were brilliantly written novels. You see, we as the audience are first put in the shoes of Teddy. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki arrests its driver, Alex Jones, but a lack of evidence forces his release. This is classic film noir. They are investigating the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando, who was incarcerated for drowning her three children.
And that is exactly where it exceeds. And trust me, you probably wont like it. They go to this mysterious island enveloped in fog to investigate an escape. Teddy is shown as a scared man; a man of war and violence as portrayed in various flashbacks. This prompts Daniels to break into the restricted Ward C. Shutter Island is one of the most well crafted psychological thrillers to come by since Silence Of The Lambs.
Shutter Island is adapted by a book written by Dennis Lehane wrote gone baby, gone and mystic river. They are given access to the hospital, but they are told that Ward C is off limits and that the lighthouse has already been searched. A film that will divide the film community. This is also a film I would recommend seeing a second time. Daniels and Aule find the staff confrontational. A film that will make you question your own sanity. And many of those ideas are present in Shutter Island; the cliff scenes scream Hitchcock.
