Synopsis This story takes place in a typical American neighborhood, when some new neighbors come to live in the house next to Ray Peterson. I've always remembered The 'Burbs as boating a grainy picture but it's hit-and-miss in this transfer. The 'Burbs went into wide release only a few days after Hanks netted his first Oscar nomination for Big. Ray gets into trouble with his neighbours, a hefty busybody Rick Ducommun , a freaked-out ex-soldier Bruce Dern and a spacey teenager Corey Feldman , but when the neighbourhood grouch suddenly disappears, they all band together to investigate the Klopek place. No one in their right mind would attempt a remake because the original is as good as it gets. However, Shout may have done some denoising to sharpen the colors. If you own any of the other Blu-rays of the film, I think that Shout Select's Collector's Edition is worth picking up, although look for it on discount.
The 'Burbs blends slapstick comedy and spine-thrilling mystery with Tom Hanks' typical witty humour. Result: an awesome experience on Mayfield Pl that never ceases to crack one up. Much to the disappointment of his wife Carol for spending a relaxing week at home, Ray Peterson and his three neighbors set out to investigate the next door residence after they begin to observe strange happenings. Suburbanites have a shallow gene pool. In a way, all of us want to be Ray Peterson and all of us know an Art Weingartner. This caused the actors to improvise a lot of their lines and much of the dialogue stayed in the film. The perfect men to keep an eye on weirdos who keep horses in their basement would surely be Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Ric Ducommun, with Corey Feldman on hand to watch the show and deliver precision guided one liners. When Hanks becomes convinced that his new, intensely private neighbors are members of an evil cult, he struggles to get behind their closed doors with outrageous results.

The 66 minute making of covers the movie from inception to legacy with director Joe Dante and several members of the cast speaking of their experience during the movie. Set in an average neighborhood that is anything but ordinary, The 'Burbs blends slapstick comedy and spine-thrilling mystery with the type of humor that has made Tom Hanks one of today's most beloved stars. It felt dopey and unrealistic, and not in that fun light-hearted way that is entertaining regardless of the story.
