But the family's financial situation changes for the better when Vivian's older cousin Rita breaks out of a rehab clinic, pregnant and with nowhere to go. It is a real gem. When Mickey's daughter Rita runs away from an asylum, Vivian's dad offers shelter to her if Mickey will pay for a plush flat. That's not spoiling so much, I don't think, because the movie has much more depth than that. Vivian Natasha Lyonne has just grown breasts and now considers herself deformed. Also, refreshingly, the comedy is driven by the characters and not by the cheap nostalgia of tacky butterfly lapels and disco classics. It's really touching how the Abromowitzes handle themselves and make each others' experiences memorable. Yet it also has a certain sweetness, a good-hearted feeling for thisfamily, which stays together and plugs away. That's not spoiling so much, I don't think, because the movie has much more depth than that. Now, before we get into the fundamentals of how you can watch 'Slums of Beverly Hills' right now, here are some specifics about the Fox Searchlight comedy flick. Natasha Lyonne stars as a teenage girl growing up in various slums in Beverley Hills, but her family cannot necessarily afford to live in them. Which means there has to be a plan.
Actually it's a pretty good coming-of-age story circa 1976. One brother is a struggling actor and the other is too young to really fit in anywhere. After escaping her cousin hospice, her family must take care of her cousin and is responsible for supervising it. Colgados in Beverly Hills is a film directed by Tamara Jenkins The Savages and accompanying Natasha Lyonne American Pie, Orange is the New Black , Alan Arkin Argo, Little Miss Sunshine and Bryna Weiss Taxi: Total Drift disappears but not forgotten among others. When Mickey's daughter Rita runs away from an asylum, Vivian's dad offers shelter to her if Mickey will pay for a plush flat. It's an incisive portrait of how a dysfunctional family can survive by establishing parameters which allow them to get from point A to point B on a daily basis, and what it takes to maintain the kind of internal support system that enables them to function and stay together, though individually their goals and aspirations may be pulling them in opposite directions.
I didn'tbelieve it, I didn't like the way it played, and I think it should have beencut from the movie. But then lifechanges radically for the Abramovitzes when Rita , the troubleddaughter of Murray's rich brother, comes to stay with them. Her portrayal is earthy and utterly believable, and like Arkin's Murray, is an honest reflection of how most people grapple with the uncertainties of life. Also giving a memorable performance is Marisa Tomei, as Murray's niece, Rita, who is deliciously tacky and adds some real spice to the film. Murray concocts a scheme in which Murray's wealthy brother Mickey pays to put Murray's family and Rita in a nice apartment, in exchange for taking care of Rita and under the pretense that she will be attending nursing school. Then there's his rich brother Mickey , who startspaying the rent in return for Murray taking his troublesome daughter off hishands.
A woman stumbling down a dark road trying to hitchhike flashes her breasts at a trucker. After moving around for most of her life, her family's finally found a place to call home with help from her uncle's money. Mickey makes lots of money but has no class, and there's a painful scenein an airport restaurant where he blurts out crass insults and Murray--who hasbeen taking his handouts all his life--decides he's had enough. The lead character, at age 14, meets with a plastic surgeon to discuss breast reduction surgery. It seems to rub some people the wrong way for unclear reasons, but I found it to be touching and hilarious from start to finish.
And that means living in Beverly Hills. Lyonne has the film's most important role, and is the key to thecomedy. Uncle Mickey sends them money to survive. When I read the tv guide, it said this movie was a comedy. The father lives in the cheapest apartments he can find within the Beverly Hills city limits and skips out on rent when he can no longer make the payments.
He is a poor provider buta good father, who may skip out on the rent and be a lousy car salesman, but heinsists that his kids do their homework. The movie is centered on a family whose father moves his kids from cheap apartment to cheap apartment within the Beverly Hills city limits so his kids can go to school there; this father then lies to his wealthy older brother whose daughter has just gotten out of rehab, telling him that she's going to live with the family so she can go to nursing school in order to scam the wealthy older brother into paying for a nicer place to live. Just pure script and acting. Description: Vivian's family has no money and lives as they can on the outskirts of Beverly Hills. Murray, however, suddenly has something else to deal with: Vivian, who is about to enter her freshman year at high school.
Meanwhile, Murray is trying to date an older woman who only wants companionship and nothing physical, Vivian's older brother is auditioning for a musical, and her younger brother is desperate for any display of affection. But he's determined that his children, Ben David Krumholtz , Vivian Natasha Lyonne and Rickey Eli Marienthal , are going to get a good education, and that means keeping them in the best schools. Lead character stabs her uncle in the thigh with a fork, causing him to limp with a bloody bandage in a later scene. Vivian must babysit her adult cousin, making sure she gets to nursing school and avoids pills and booze. Given the mature content, Slums of Beverly Hills is best for older teens and parents. She also has a nice pragmatic approach tosexuality, as in a scene where she consults a plastic surgeon about on-the-spotbreast reduction.
