I was driving home from a concert with a few youth kids on saturday night. This Car Had Over 105,000 Miles On It, But They Were Mostly Highway Miles And The Transmission Should Never Have Failed This Early. I was told since there is no recall, I would not be compensated. Nothing was done to correct problem for now until clutch goes out. This broke in the middle of a busy intersection where I had to keep swaying my body forward until the car had enough momentum to roll across.
Bad bearings for sure and possibly need a rebuild on transmission. I've owned 3 5-speed Hondas and they all called for changing the trans oil every 30k miles. The transmission locked up and needed to be replaced,the mechanic said there were rebuilds available but stated the Toyota replacement was the way to go, I agree. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was told that the transmission would need replacing. If you are looking for a reliable, fuel efficient used car with good cargo space and comfortable ride, Toyota Matrix is your best bet. I Was Traveling On Interstate I-565 In Light Traffic.
I parked my vehicle to do some errands and came back the car would start, but would not enter into any gear. I believe there is a definite problem with the transmission and I am not the only one that believes this, how many people must complain or does someone have to die for them to take some action?. Vehicle was not using Cruise Control. Toyota district manager refused to contact me to discuss the issue. The vehicle is no longer under warranty now, the vehicle was purchased in may 2003. I have been doing research on this model year matrix to see if it was just my car doing this, but it looks like there have been other people with 2004 matrix that have the same problem. Sorry, not user error here.
Earlier, when the car was at 74k, the front axle on the transmission broke. This is what happened to me. So much for the 60,000 mile warranty. I Tried To Shift Into 3rd Gear, But It Was Stuck In 2nd. I had to replace the clutch.

The Gear Fluid Was Dispensed Into The Fluid Reservoir. When toyota designed the 6 speed, they started with the 5 speed design and added an extra gear. I don't believe a manual transmission should need to be replaced at 98,000 miles. The Car Was In Fifth Gear And Cruise Control Was Set At About 70 Mph. Please be aware of a serious transmission problem on these vehicles.
The entire transmission needs to be replaced. It's nice to see that im not the only one with this problem. I Purchased The Car New And Have Serviced The Car With The Dealership From Day One. It is dangerous and I am going to cause an accident one of these days. Basically, it is a poorly designed transmission. Have enough fluid to do it again, but I'll probably wait another 5000 miles and change it again with the next oil change.
Does anyone know if these problems were eventually corrected after 2004? The clutch smells like it is buring again and the dealer said it is from the old clutch even though they replaced it. Our mechanic said it is the main bearing in the transmission and it would get louder and then seize up eventually. Had mechanic do a check and couldn't find anything. Transmission Went Out Due To A Faulty Bearing…. I sent a certified letter to the president of Toyota Motor Corp. Will never buy another one. I'm getting to where I hate working on vehicles more and more every year.
